Further Activity in El Hierro

Is a 2nd Earthquake swarm beginning?  Is there something more working it's way towards the surface?

10.23.2011 14:46 - The Ministry of Economy, Finance and Security early reports have come in of a second earthquake swarm... earthquakes recorded in the last few hours are occurring at a depth of between 20 and 25 km.

Aerial reconnaissance by the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) of the Canary Islands this morning over the Sea of Calm, has been able to specify the nature of changes in the spot, visible in the early hours from La Restinga.

Scientists have identidied the material, darker brown than the rest, "as fine, grouped into circles and reflective." Also, according to the report submitted by the National Geographic Institute and the directors of PEVOLCA, "this material appears to be an accumulation of granular particles, confirming  that the area under the water closest to the material has a greater degree of turbulence."

Moreover, the report notes the absence of definitive proof "it might be fine scoria lapilli and ash type." If this were so, this process seems to follow the same pattern as subaerial eruptions that have recently taken place in El Hierro.

Also, from the point of view of the volcano tremor follows the normal dynamics of these eruptions, and they have not observed any significant change.

Earthquakes

In reference to the number of earthquakes that have occurred in the last hours in El Hierro, the volcano monitoring network of 24 monitoring stations of the National Geographic Institute, registered and located 78 seismic events, one of them slightly felt in the epicentral area. The maximum magnitude recorded in this period is 3.1.

Most of events were located in the Gulf at depths of about 20-25 km. Almost all are located in the sea and are aligned NNW-SSE direction.

In reference to the direction of the Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk (PEVOLCA) repeated that we are in a yellow alert situation on the island of El Hierro and semaphore Red, Level 1, in La Restinga, as well as maintaining vigilance over the evolution of the process to note any changes that might involve some risk.

Viewing the graph of the evolution of the depths of earthquakes, one thing is clear, the seismic activity is going to concentrate between 19 and 24 km, as before the last eruption, indicating that there is "something" down there that is under pressure or pressurized (magma making its way??) as before the last eruption and shows that the map is in the north, under the sea in the Gulf Valley-volcanic earthquake swarm II?.... it could be almost anything ... We'll see how it evolves ..
